Hi,
I dont know if I am in the right place or not but I have an outstanding dispute with the tax dept.regarding a reclaiming of tax credits.
It dates back to around 1990 to 1993. I was working in London as a self employed contractor and had to produce receipts from a book issued to me by the tax dept.
Basically I had an accountant who did my returns and I recieved some rebates on payments I had made, later after I had left the UK (went to South Africa) the tax department contacted me claiming that they had overpaid me and I owed these rebates back.
After some correspondence I recieved a final letter from them saying I should pay the money at my earliest convenience.
That was the last I heard of them
My problem is I dont know what the implications of having this thing hanging over me are. Especially if I was to return to the UK
If I contact them will they still want the money and is it likely they will want interest on it?
I would appreciate any advice you may have
Thanks

Hello gengiskhan

This must be a different type of tax credit. The tax credits we are suffering from here did not start until 2003. They are payments made to families on lower incomes and to people with children to make it worth their while working (supposedly).

You would probably be best off getting back to your accountant or finding another one who knows about tax and the self employed.

Good luck

Hi Gengis and Welcome.

As Auntie in her above post says it looks like this is a different issue to the one we are involved with.

However, it is my belief - though I could be wrong - that you cannot be pursued for this as it's a debt that is older than 6 years.

Like I say, I can't be 100% sure so I would suggest that you seek the advice of an accountant or HMRC themselves. Maybe a phone call to them along the lines of; "Hello HMRC? I have a friend who is worried sick about this little problem and am trying to help him resolve it ...."
if you catch my drift.

Anyway, thanks for contacting us, good luck and please feel free to stay in touch.
