Hello i just need a bit of advice please. I've just opened letters to me and my husband advising that we owe just over £4000 on overpaid credits for period ending 04/05.
We were both self-employed at the time and i'm pretty sure that i kept them up to date with earnings up to that point - i do remember getting stressed at the time about remembering to do so.
I've just looked at my file of letters/statements from the TCO stating the amounts that we were due etc etc - but these seem to all be slightly different and having just re-read them are completely incomprehensible.
I've filled in the TC846 form and will send it recorded and am also about to do a SAR letter.
However, how much hope do i have of disputing the overpayment claim if i simply don't understand their figures myself? And if i supplied them with accurate figures for that tax year - how can they say they have overpaid. Am foxed but am determined to dispute this.
Hi Suzie Welcome, how indeed ? The HMRC system is something that resembles a broken Enigma machine, data in, nonsense out.
We have had members who have employed accountants that can't work this shambles out.
If you study the forms etc enough you will eventually come across errors, you just have to get your eye in. Chances are they have input your earnings incorrectly, alternatively you earned much more than you estimated you would.
You are right to dispute.
Others will be along soon, however you may need to supply a few more details so people can help.
