This story relates to a tax credit fraud, but contains a memorable comment from an HMRC official, no less (praise be! someone has seen the light!) saying "The vast majority of tax credit claimants are honest, and claim only what they are entitled to".

An echo of the one time Labour Paymaster General Dawn "Red" Primarolo's statement "most claimants are honest", this has got to be a good quote for our letters to our MPs urging a change in the system!

Seems that HMRC are stepping up compliance checks, presumably random, to spot dodgy claims such as this one, which should not have been accepted at the time. Once fraudulent claims are reduced, you would hope that the government and HMRC would see just how much ERROR there is left in the system where claimants have acted completely honestly (as most do - even senior HMRC officials admit that!), and finally accept that these system-created overpayments must be written off. No-one wants fraudsters to profit from their actions, but the innocent should not be forced to pay for the guilty and the inept.

i agree, they need to check these overpayments and fraudulent claims and get as much back as possible to give back to the people that need it
