Hi could you explain exactly what the disregard is. After being out of work for 3 months i started my own courier business in December 2004. I had to estimate my 2005 renewal because i didnt have any idea what i might earn. I was able to give an exact figure in 2006 not realising the dept i had run up. Thanks for any help. Dave.

In 2004 (& I think in 2005) the disregard was £2,500. This means that if your income in 04-05 tax year was less than £2,500 above that in 03-04 then your tax credits were worked out on the lower figure.

At some stage (I think it was 2006) the disegard was dramatically increased to £25,000.
