hi, I am new here, I'm a bit worried...sadly my Husband and I split at the beginning of the year. I therefore had to put in for a single claim as couldn't afford not to, I was reluctant to anyway as I have already been given an over payment of £570 from 07/08( the joint claim) when I was made redundant on mat leave then in Oct when I got a new job they informed me I'd now been 'overpaid' and owed them this back. Anyway to cut the story short, I've always now over estimated my income and always informed them by phone when my review comes around and also phone twice to ensure it has been calc correctly! I received a letter this week asking me to call them as they were doing tax credit reviews for ''low income families'' .., now firstly, I've always told them if my circumstances change, secondly, why would they send me this just out of the blue? They do worry me as they seem to make so many c*ck ups , they also make you feel like you're some how not being 'truth ful' by ''reviewing'' your awards- is this a common thing or am I being paranoid due to the way people have been treated in the past by hmrc? They do have the ability to make you feel like it is you that has made the mistake! Any help would be v much appreciated.

I've not heard of this but have seen something which implies they could be contacting some people - not to get at them but to see whether they are claiming all they are entitled to. I don't understand why such an approach should apply to someone like you, though. It would be more applicable to people who aren't claiming at all.
If you are confident everything they have had from you is correct then there is no reason for you to be concerned about ringing them. In my experience most of the staff are trying to do their best but are hampered severely by an over-complicated and inflexible system which often seems to make it difficult for them to be fully aware of all the rules they are supposed to follow.
Incidentally, have they asked you to ring the normal helpline number (0845 300 3900) or have they given you a special one? It would be helpful if you could post when you have spoken to them, to give an idea of what this is about. |

| hi, thank you for your reply, I did ring them it wasn't the normal number - was an 01293 number, they just said that it was a 'customer service' review that they were doing...I'm still not really any the wiser why they would do this as I've always been quick to inform them if there were any changes- I may give them another ring in the week just to make (doubly, tripley!) sure they have my correct details as so worried about over payments (again!)having read so many other peoples' problems they've had to deal with..sometimes I wonder if anyone will ever really fully understand the tc system! |

It sounds like it is one of the letters where they want you to contact them so they can just check over your details and make sure there are no other changes of circumstances.
Lower income families by definition will have higher awards. This means that any error or failure to report a change of circumstances will lead to a bigger overpayment.
This is an exercise to make contact with people (rather than letting people wait until the end of the year and building up a bigger overpayment) in order to try and reduce overpayments.
