Hi I'm not new but I had to take a break from tax credits as they were affecting me so much. Even now I can't talk about this without crying. The last time I posted the tax credit office had suspended my alleged overpayment as I had proved they were wrong. The case hinged on a change of circumstances they say I did not inform them of. I proved I did but it took months. The claim was 03-04!!
I still haven't had the overpayment written off. They say they probably owe me money and offered me some but warned me I may have to pay it back. Understandably I said no. I have complained and complained but have been told today by a tax office worker. "There are no systems in place to reinstate your award. There is no timesacle for installing a system". I am "one of thousands of people in this situation and unless I have a direct line to Gordon Brown it doesn't matter how much I complain nothing will happen".
How do I fight against that?
I have contacted the media and am hoping that someone will be interested. This is ruining me. No wonder people quit and just pay the money back. Just wondered if anyone had any bright ideas!?

Hiya Franners.

Firstly, please don't let them break you. It can only happen if you let them - I know it seems hard, but we have all been in similar situations. You're amongst friends here .....

You have obviously been down the dispute path before, so I'm going to assume that you know how to do it. For anyone else who is reading this go to: http://www.taxcc.org/Dispute_1st_things_1st.html and follow the dispute steps.

Have you approached your MP? Maybe you can let us know (through this forum) who she/he is, and what Party they belong to?

Anyone who just quits and pays the money back (although it is understandable) is really helping all of this to continue.

I've forwarded your post to Paula (Paula@TaxCC.org), but feel free to contact her independently. Her contact details are on http://www.taxcc.org/Contact_Us.html.

We aren't here just to give advice, we also give support - and every one of us really do know what you're feeling. We have all been, or are going, through it.

Keep your chin up, Franners. They can take your money, just like any highwayman or mugger. But they can only take YOU if you allow it. Don't let them beat you. We're here to help, and others will be along.

hiya Franners

sorry to hear the distress HMRC are causing you. i can understand completely the want to shut it all out and pretend it isn't happening. I've had to do that several times myself. i used to naively believe if they knew the distress this all caused they would try harder, but i have come to the conclusion they couldn't ever understand. they think this is just about settling a mistake (they made)

by law you are entitled to this claim and yet they are sitting there saying the HMRC equivalent of "the computer says no"

have you managed to involve your MP? has that had any effect?

i am aware of some of what i have taken to calling 'blackhole cases', I'm presuming there is some 'glitch' in the system that is stopping your claim being paid, do you know any of the details about it?

i have be hearing a few stories of "we can't reinstate your claim" recently, and most victims are being fobbed off with wrong information and offered only a new claim, that looses them all the backdated award, at best.

webmaster has posted my email address above, so drop me a line and let me know about your MP and what you know so far.

by the way, whereabouts in the country are you? and what are you doing this Thursday afternoon around 4pm?

Hi Franners.

I know that it's a lot easier to say than do, but just keep hanging in there.

It IS perfectly possible to win this - I did and others have too - it's all about being determined to beat them.

YOU CAN DO THIS !! and we'll be here to help & support you. You want advice? Fine, we'll advise you. You need a shoulder to cry on? That's fine too - we'll be that shoulder.

WHEN you win, you'll get an incredible buzz that will make it all worth while. Keep focused on that thought !

"The best way to take control over a people and control them utterly is to take a little of their freedom at a time, to erode rights by a thousand tiny and almost imperceptible
reductions. In this way the people will not see those rights and freedoms being removed until past the point at which these changes cannot be reversed."
