Few weeks ago HMRC settled my dispute about an overpayment from 2003/4, paying me back a lump sum of £1350.
Today they sent me a duplicate notice... and have paid me again!
Just when I thought I wouldn't have to deal with these chumps again...

Keep it safe bonny lad 'cos as sure as Newcastle Brown Ale is no longer made in Newcastle (it's actually made at Dunston, Gateshead) the buggers will be asking you for it back !!

Is it definately a duplicate? It couldn't be monies owing or for some other year could it?

I beggars belief, it really does. Everything about this screams "error". I've got two identical award notices for the same period and two identical payments made into my bank account.
So I rang them this morning to query. After a while on hold, and some "checking with my manager" type shenanigans, I'm told I'm entitled to the money. And get this - she actually said something like, "don't worry, these calls are recorded."
Trouble is, because of the byzantine way they calculate awards... and they overpaid some money, which we partly repaid, and then they wrote it off.. all this has to be crossreferenced against what we were actually entitled to for that year, oh and of course the lump sum happened mid year so that affects it, and the "overpayment" meant they stopped payment our regular installments, so that has to be taken into account.. etc etc etc
In other words, who am I to argue?
All the same, I think I'll stick the money in a savings a/c until at least a few months after the end of the tax year |

Very sensible.
Just be careful which bank you stick it in !!

Right, I'd suggest you SARN request a recording of this call, noting the date, time and the number you called from (also any name the Helpline worker gave you), then when you get it you can spend the money secure in the knowledge that if or when they come for it back, you can prove you were promised that it was yours and have fulfilled your responsibilities to check.
Worth the price of a stamp to get yourself £1350 to spend, don't you think?!

Excellent advice indeed, Ali - received the CD today, a mere 2-3 weeks after writing to them (last one took about 6 months!)
Perhaps it helped that I was able to give them the time, date and originating number of the call
Case closed.... again! :) |
