Interesting article today with regard to thousands of retired public sector workers having their pensions reduced after a massive overpayments blunder. It appears huge numbers of ex-military personnel and NHS staff are said to be caught up in the chaos, which is thought to date back years. The Lib Dem Treasury spokesman Vince Cable apparently asked the Chancellor: "How many people are we talking about, how much money is involved, what are the steps that are going to be taken to retrieve the overpayments - which I understand in some cases is going back decades and are potentially enormous? I hope none of us can face the possibility of large numbers of ex-servicemen suddenly being faced with bailiffs turning up and asking them to repay overpayments." Mr Darling responded that repayments were "not going to happen", but added: "It will be necessary to adjust what's paid for the future. It does need to be put right from next year." SO, let me get this straight, overpayments were made through no fault of the recipient and they will not have to be repaid???? Have the government softened and are they beginning to realise that their ineptitude should be down to them and not out of the pocket of the innocent? http://news.uk.msn.com/uk/article.aspx?cp-documentid=11941944 It will be interesting to see how this is dealt with.

Thanks for that Fizzy.
I too read this (In the Mirror newspaper) and seriousy considered posting it on this forum, but got sidetracked & didn't!!
I agree that it will be interesting to see how this is dealt with as at first glance it would appear to be one rule for them and another for us, and that in my book could be discrimination.
No nurse, I said "Are my test results back?" NOT "Are my testicles black?" .. but thanks anyway!! |

If you still have the article, Auntie, any chance of a scan or a quote of the relevant text, please? Ta, Ali.

Not a new article, but just a little quote from the link mentioned in the first post of this thread.
Of course it's wrong if "large numbers of ex-servicemen [were] suddenly being faced with bailiffs turning up and asking them to repay overpayments." But how is it right for large numbers of struggling and honest families to suddenly also be "faced with bailiffs turning up and asking them to repay overpayments"?
We need to write to our MPs. Justice can't just apply to one group of people but not another.
