Found on Rightsnet - an alternative Helpline number to call. Told it is cheaper...

"Found this landline number for the TC helpline seems to be answered right away so useful if like me you try and avoid 0845 numbers.

01355-359 007"

Not a lot of people know (I didn't) that the Helpline is charged at a higher rate... making even more money out of us!

It's all a scam. There's a school of thought (see our Petition) that the overpayments pre 2005 were orchestrated for a happy electorate and a new Labour victory, only to be recovered once the PM was safely installed. I could actually believe that, having seen how the rhetoric is a million miles from the truth (eg. 'consultations', court as a 'last resort' and people with severe health conditions having write-offs. Bull poop!!!)

That's why it's so important to keep a detailed record of all phone calls and if possible keep itemised phone bills so that the cost of all phone calls incurred in trying to sort out disputes etc can be claimed back when you have won your case. Sadly it appears yet again that this government is trying to penalise those who can least afford it.

I couldn't agree more.

And, while you're at it, keep a record of all other expenses too like postage, stationery, travelling expenses, your time etc.

I would suggest that it's not unreasonable to charge £15/£25 per hour for your time - especially when you're trying to work your way through your SARN stuff where - after all - you're virtually doing a forensic accountants job.

I believe that if HMRC are on the receiving end of a few big bills from us, someone somewhere will begin to get the message - especially when you add interest for late payment of those bills & threaten them with Recovery Proceedings.

Yes, I know that HMRC consider themselves to be immune from prosecution etc. but that could all change under the weight of numbers.

Stand up for yourselves & get stuck into them!!

And on the subject of cheaper phone numbers, don't forget my old favourite www.saynoto0870.com which gives freephone or cheaper alternative numbers for most 0870, 0845 etc numbers used by large organisations from the private and public sector.
