This is long, sorry......
I have been getting tax credits since 2000 when my first daughter was born and all was going well till this year. A couple of years ago me and my partner split up so I put a single claim in but then we decided to get back together about ten months later so went back claiming jointly. Since the start of my single claim and now with my joint claim I have been getting paid manually by giro which is very annoying as there seems to be no record of any award notices etc which have been awarded to us. I did not even recieve a renewal pack this year. I thought nothing of this until in February this year when I needed to telephone HMRC to notify them of a couple of changes of circumstances. I had gone on maternity and my daughter was due on the 19th feb, also my partner had stopped working and was claiming JSA. I was told to put these changes in writing which I did a week after my daughter was born I waited until she was born so I could tell them her date of birth 21 feb 2008. That was now nearly seven months ago. I was still getting my manual payments up until July and now have had no payments for the last three months. I have put in two complaint letters one which I got a letter back saying that they will aim to reply by the 13th July 2008 and the second was wrote in August with a reply saying thatthey aim to reply by the 10th Oct. To this very day they still have not acknowledeged that my daughter has been born and I am now due to go back to work at the end of this month. My partner got employment again in May which added to our list of change of circumstances. I have three other children and we are having to live off 0 pounds I need my tax credits to feed us because the bills get paid out of the monthly salary. I am so frustrated and feel like I am banging my head against a brick wall everytime I call I get told a different story. And to top it all off I got a visit from the overpayment department in June the day I was posting my first complaint letter off regarding the length of time its taking to deal with our change of circumstances, the officer said we have been over paid from the years 03-04 £600 and was made to sign a direct debit form paying them back £40 a month which stared in July, when they stopped paying us our tax credits. When we got no reply from our first complaint we write another letter to the director explaining the full story and outlining what their responsiblities are to us and and ours to them, we have kept to ours telling them every change when they occur but they have not kept tp theirs at all. I feel like this is unfair that we are paying them back our over payment but they have stopped our money full stop I phoned today and asked if I could get an emergency payment if i went to my local tax office and she said to me no because of our awards "status" which is in awaiting payment status but she could not tell me when I would be paid anything and if it would go into my bank account or manually like before.

I want to know what I should do next I don't know whether or not to go to my local MP or contact the media as I know HMRC do not like bad publicity. I also want to dispute the amount they say we were overpaid and was under the impression if you complain about it you do not have to pay it back till its been proved you owe the money at all. And really is seven months a proper amount of time for changes of circumstances to be put onto a system because I feel like they are really taking the p****.

The helpline is not really a helpline either I never get any of my questions answered properly. PLEASE ANY ADVICE WOULD BE GOOD

Hi..

The answer to your question is yes, get in touch with your MP double quick .. http://www.theyworkforyou.com/ find them here.. and also get in touch with the press, and ask your MP to comment on your story, as well, you should be getting payments into your Bank or building society.. because from what the members of this forum say , that if you recieve manual paymnets there are problems with your claim..HMRC problems.

The truth is out there.. GO get it......Non Illigitamus Carborundum
