Rank Group, the operator of Mecca Bingo clubs and Grosvenor casinos, is in line for a £36 million VAT rebate after winning a legal dispute with the tax authorities.

The decision could spark other bingo operators to lodge claims, with analysts speculating on a total liability to the Government of more than £100 million.

Once again the government, through HMRC, has been found to be fleecing its citizens and businesses, and once again it has taken legal action to put things right. Nice when you can afford it! And once again the government will have to pay out from the 'public purse' which always seems to have mothballs in it when it comes to tax credit overpayment victims.

I was amazed to find the following article showing just how much in the way of Tax Credits and Pension Credits goes unclaimed:

So let's get this straight: the government boasts relentlessly about the 'six million families benefiting [sic] from tax credits', yet has presided over such a dangerously flawed system that not only are a third of families almost routinely overpaid each year, with 'recoverable' overpaymemts that they have spent in good faith, but because of the system's fallibility and appalling reputation, millions of low-income families are turning away from them and refusing to claim! So by its ineptitude, HMRC and the government are turning in a net profit, saving themselves more money than they have even overpaid! So the Lying Scotsman satisfies his lust for our money by having HMRC 'compensated' for failed IT by the firm(s) which supplied the dodgy technology which overpaid us in the first place. Then HMRC and the government get to claw back and recover - with menaces - as much of the overpaid money as we can be persecuted and browbeaten into giving them back, by borrowing, sliding deeper into poverty and debt, or going without. Thirdly, because the system is so dreadful, they get to save £3.6 billion because Jo(e) Public is too petrified to claim this boomerang 'benefit'!!!

It's certainly 'heads we lose, tails they win', isn't it? And two years to wait until a General Election and any real willingness to get this 'system' changed.

Just part of this unclaimed money could end all our misery in one fell swoop, just by a write-off and a chance for us to safely exit the system. All the time and effort previously spent bludgeoning us to pay back money we never owed, have never had any proper explanation for owing, have already spent, and don't have could be far more usefully spoent in reforming the system to make it work safely and be reasonably fair and transparent.

But Brown knows best, doesn't he?

You can help. Please write - URGENTLY - to your MP and ask her or him to come to room 'n', Portcullis House, Westminster at 3pm on Monday 9th June to be part of our Public launch of our 'Voices of the Victims' anthology, hear what we have to say about the system, and help us to put it right!

Please do this for us, and for yourselves. All the advice here and on You must be logged in to see this link. comes entirely free, from hardworking volunteers dedicated to a safer, fairer system. All we ask - all we ever ask - is that you help us, to the best of your ability, to help you.

Please invite your MP - you can even ask your children to write a card! We badly need some Labour MPs there on the day. We have Conservatives, Lib Dems and media folk in good numbers, and even two human rights lawyers, but - for some odd reason - NOT A SINGLE LABOUR MP!

Let's put that right... Thanks!
