We're getting lots of publicity from different sources, and thought it might be motivating to keep some kind of record of some of it.

We've got a link on Rip-Off Britain

...and an excellent article by Sarah on TaxationWeb:

Hmm, not inconsequential problems, I can see that... But wasn't the media, only about a decade or so ago, owned and enraptured by the antics of the Conservative party? How has that happened in such a short space of years?

...okay, I can see why. Blair's, and now Brown's, New Labour Party hasn't been Socialist at all, but was a recycled Tory party, Blair of course coming from a traditional Conservative party background. So I can see why that might be.

Same policies, same predisposition to help the better off and go through the motions of helping the poor. Perhaps Blair, Brown et al.just preferred red to blue when it came to the matter of rosettes.

But I'm still thinking that there've been stories breaking through from the tabloids for a long time, and a good deal of them have had links posted here, so it is possible.

And, of course, there's always Private Eye and the various journals.

I still think we need to keep the pressure up, and we have had a lot of interest shown recently by regional TV and national radio, so things are looking up!

I do think, too, that the personal touch goes a long way, and whenever I make a new contact, I'm always amazed by the contacts that contact has. Only the other day I found someone who is a freelance journalist, and she was amazed with some of the revelations around this system that I could now - thanks to everyone here being eyes, ears and noses and spreading the word about everything uncovered - let her know about, that I was oblivious to some months ago. She's now gone to find out some more, do some research of her own, and get back to me...

Never forget, our site and collective experiences and info could be a carer-maker for someone - quite likely, someone reading this... Any lawyer successfully challenging this would be making caselaw history. Many of our stories - well told - could be real human interest stories. And even a backbench politician could do very well for themselves if they challenged the system, and captured the mood of the nation.

So I do think there's cause for catious optimism and to continue with our campaign, full-throttle.

Touche. I can't edit and I can't spell! (...and I don't know how to insert accents over letters either, or change the font colour, etc., etc...)

And why aren't you top poster any more? Is it because you defected to the Disgruntled Lemmings [an HMRC forum], pray tell us?

Hello Ali

The Lemmings site is almost dead.

There was a big fight (apparently) that was nothing to do with me.

As for myself, I'm caring for my Mum who is an Alzheimer's and cancer sufferer and things have been a bit "heavy" lately.

In addition to this, No. 1 son has made another attempt on his life and I've had him sectioned under the Mental Health act for his own protection.

The good news is that my ex-wife has agreed that we should get back together and we're looking at "new" houses, and I've had another letter from my MP Dave Anderson in which he tells me that he's chasing Lord Forkbender for an answer as to why he sold the details of victims of Tax Credit court cases to Loan Sharks.

Hi Alan.

Sorry to hear about your Mum and eldest son - I can see you have rather a lot to contend with at the moment, and I hope things improve for you all soon.

Glad that your ex-wife has agreed to give things another go, and if you do go ahead with a 'new' house, it will, I am sure, feel like a new start. I wish you well.

Thanks for reminding me to chase my MP over BentFork's (or Forking-Bent's ?) dodgy dealings. She wrote to me saying she'd made enquiries, but that was some time ago, and that's as far as it went.

I will add that to my list of people to chase/complaints to write!

Hi Alan - I do hope that your family are ok and that you are too. Such a worry you have had, still find time to help the casualties.
My mother also has Alzheimers so can understand your position very well. Best wishes to your son, do hope he gets well soon. As the song goes "when the going gets tough, the tough get going" you are strong and dependable.
All the very best

Hi Alan,

Sorry to hear that you have major problems to deal with in your private life. My nan had Alzeheimers and only recognised me so I know it's tough to deal with.

Hope your son starts to feel better soon; as a failed suicidee I know how terrible he must feel, but that doesn't help you. I think it's really hard for families as they try to understand but can't comprehend how bleak the world seems to someone who sees suicide as a better option, or how desperate you can feel. Now I'm glad that my family couldn't understand, I don't wish such a viewpoint on anyone. I hope he is able to start focusing on what is good soon.

Good news about your relationshipm, though - wish you all the best with it.

Will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers.

Thank you for your kind words Sarah.

It's no picnic that's for sure, but we'll get through it someday - just as we'll bring HMRC Tax Credits to heel too!

Sorry to hear of your probs Al, I feel like mine fade into insignificance and in reality they do.

But anyhow my mp has now contacted 'the minister responsible' Jane Kennedy, whom has managed to reverse an earlier 'factual' statement on why we were overpaid. (with no acknowledgement that they did give my mp wrong information, he will need to spot it, I will of course help him spot it)

She also says my 'human rights were not infringed because article 6 ..because claiments can appeal to an independant tribunal..and claiments can ask for a judicial review...the courts have confirmed this (cf/1057/2003) blah blah...

my MP has also had a response (think most may have) from
RT HON Jane Kennedy MP - HM Treasury,1 Horse Guards Rd, London SW1A 2HQ (Sent as she left for the recess).

"as set out in my written statement dated 25/07/07...HMRC have
discovered that....officials have NOT followed the correct administrative procedure when reopening a tax credit award...affecting in total AROUND 160,000 AWARDS FROM
2003/2004 and 2004/2005....all those affected will shortly be written to" etc..

Thanks for that Sammy.

It's good to see that your MP is still on the case after all. Good luck with that one!

When may we see your article in the Reader's Disgust?

Glad some MPs are supportive. Just had a most unhelpful response from mine saying basically pay up there's nothing I can do and by the way I can't support Early Day Motions because I'm a junior whip.

Charming no doubt now who I won't be voting for at next election. Wonder what she would say about this announcement from Jane Kennedy as I'm fairly certain I fall into this bracket of 2003 claiamtns.

The government and HMRC will have to decide what's more important - having no accountability, or salvaging some of their incredibly bad reputation.
