.......... found on the Daily Mail online edition:

"I worked for HMRC for 32 years and left 3 years ago. When I first started there [in Customs & Excise] everything was run extremely efficiently. Things went really downhill when New Labour got into power. Basically incompentent people were overpromoted for sucking up to management and they then over promoted their incompetent pals. How well you could do your job did not come into it., it was how eloquent you could be on an application form stretching the truth and who you knew in high places.

The final nail in the coffin was the merger of Inland Revenue with C&E. A merger of two different cultures with each side believing that they have been subject to a take over. There are loads of disillusioned staff there with a consequent lack of morale. Many of them trying so sort out this mess are very low grades on low pay an they probably have no support frm their management. Do not ever believe that what they tell you is correct, check it yourself, it isn't really that difficult."

"The best way to take control over a people and control them utterly is to take a little of their freedom at a time, to erode rights by a thousand tiny and almost imperceptible reductions.

In this way the people will not see those rights and freedoms being removed until past the point at which these changes cannot be reversed."
