Blunder on loans

Graduates overpaid more than £13 million in student loan repayments last year because of a government blunder.

A shocking 22,700 people were left out of pocket because cash was deducted from their salaries even though they had paid back all their debts in full.

The problem was caused by a delay in Revenue and Customs telling the Student Loans Company that a loan had been cleared.

Lib Dem higher education spokesman Stephen Williams slammed the error as "bureaucratic incompetence". The government said borrowers can get a full refund of overpayments with interest.
